This retirement community redefines senior housing with its 132 independent living units, 20 memory care assisted living spaces, and 4 villa-style senior living accommodations. Residents enjoy various amenities, including full kitchen and dining areas, a cocktail lounge, art studio, movie theatre, business center, library, performing arts/multipurpose auditorium, fitness center, and a 90,000-square-foot subterranean cast-in-place garage and pool. In an effort to prioritize environmental sustainability, AJK approached the electrical design of the community with a focus on minimizing its environmental impact. The exterior lighting adheres to ‘dark sky’ compliance standards and Title 24 regulations to reduce light pollution. Energy-efficient fixtures were strategically employed, surpassing California Energy Code requirements by operating 12 percent more efficiently. Additionally, a 750kW Emergency Standby Generator was installed to ensure uninterrupted operation of essential services. The utilization of 3D BIM Coordination played a pivotal role in the successful completion of this project. This development comprises four 5-story buildings, housing a total of 507 apartments. At the podium level, residents can enjoy amenities such as a pool and gym, while approximately 55,000 square feet of ground-level retail spaces add to the development's versatility. For convenience, the project offers over 1,200 parking stalls distributed across five subterranean levels. AJK played a vital role in this project by providing all conduits, wires, and devices necessary for a comprehensive low-voltage installation. The development features a striking combination of a 6-story office tower and a 35-story residential tower, unified by a shared three-story podium. This podium is designed with versatility and efficiency in mind, incorporating three below-grade parking levels, two above-grade parking floors, and space for approximately 735 vehicle stalls. The ground floor is dedicated to mixed-use purposes, including 20,000 square feet of retail space, six live/work units, service areas, and building lobbies and leasing areas. The office tower spans approximately 105,000 square feet and offers a sleek, modern workspace. It includes a ground-floor lobby and shell and core office spaces on floors 2 through 6, with mechanical space situated on the roof. The residential tower boasts 475 units, with its own ground-floor lobby and leasing areas, and a dedicated third-floor amenity space. Residential units occupy floors 4 through 34, providing extensive living options and additional amenity areas. This project’s unique combination of residential, commercial, and retail spaces, along with substantial parking and amenity provisions, makes it a comprehensive and dynamic addition to the urban landscape. OUR STORY Since 1886, the Kirkwood name has stood for more than craftsmanship. It’s stood for trust built over time. The origins of Kirkwood Electric date back to 1886, when David J. Kirkwood, a steam engineer from Scotland, immigrated to the U.S. He was appointed Chief Engineer Kilpatrick Bros. & Collins, a coal mining company, where he designed and managed their power plant and electrical systems. To enhance the mine's lighting and ventilation, David transported a steam turbine and electric dynamo into Wyoming using a mule team from Nebraska. In 1913, Archie Kirkwood succeeded his father as Chief Electrical Engineer & Supervisor, a position he held until 1928. During this time, he opened an electrical shop and successfully electrified remote ranches with extensive wooden pole lines. In 1938, David Kirkwood established Kirkwood, an electrical contracting firm specializing in residential and commercial projects well as repairs. In 1964, Arch J. Kirkwood acquired Kirkwood Electric from his father. Under his leadership, the company flourished, building strong relationships with top builder clients. In 1980, Arch sold the company to its seven top management. In 1996, Arch founded A.J. Kirkwood & Associates, Inc. (AJK), the second company to carry his family name. In 2001, he initiated an Employee-Owned Stock Ownership Program, transferring ownership of the company to his employees, marking the fifth generation. The firm has proudly been employee-owned since 2003. We’ve spent decades powering Southern California. And we’re just getting started.
